Gabriel's Oboe by Ennio Morricone, I first heard this as an arrangement for band & pipes when I took part in my last Beating Retreat on Horse Guards Parade in 1997. The whole of the parade ground was in black out, with one spotlight on the Oboe player from the Scots Guards Band. The massed bands coming in to accompany, then as the piece reaches a crescendo, the pipes come in for the big finish. Breath taking! Morricone at his most evocative.
