Hon. Gary Juffa, Governor of Oro Province and Chairman of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Public Sector Reform and Service Delivery, tables the committee's report on the Inquiry into the Governance, Regulation and Economic Sovereignty of Papua New Guinea's Alluvial Gold Mining Sector.
The committee calls it "the largest continuous theft of national wealth in the history of our independent state."
KEY POINTS
PNG's alluvial gold sector is worth about K6.4 billion a year, but only K120–150 million is declared
Between K1.5 billion and K6 billion leaves the country every year, untaxed and unrecorded
In 2022, smuggled gold was 128% of legal exports, the first time in PNG history
"Company X" hid 787 kg of gold (K145 million) in one year through a Hong Kong shell company
FASU sent over 2,000 intelligence reports in 10 years, with zero prosecutions
Customs officers are blocked from scanners at Jackson's International Airport
PNG was placed on the FATF grey list, partly because of gold smuggling
The report makes 21 recommendations under four pillars: Emergency Action, Structural Reform, Sovereign Development and Accountability
"The gold is in our rivers, Mr. Speaker, but their patience is not without end."
