In this reaction, we return to Sabaton for Lady of the Dark, the story of Serbian soldier Milunka Savić, one of the most decorated women in military history. Her career stretched from the Balkan Wars into World War I, where she became famous for her bravery, her skill with grenades, and her service with Serbia's elite Iron Regiment.
How Milunka Savić reportedly entered the Balkan Wars disguised as a man and was only discovered after being wounded
Her later open service in the Serbian Army during World War I
The elite Iron Regiment and Savić's reputation as an exceptionally skilled grenadier
Her role in the fighting around the Kolubara River during the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia
Why she became associated with the nickname "Bomber of Kolubara" and why "Lady of the Dark" appears to be a later Sabaton title rather than a contemporary nickname
The extraordinary number of Serbian and foreign decorations she received for bravery
How her story fits into the often-overlooked history of women serving in combat during the world wars
Her postwar life, including her work caring for and fostering children
How one of Serbia's greatest war heroes was nevertheless neglected and largely forgotten for part of her later life
The eventual revival of her reputation and the respect she now receives in Serbia
Savić's story is remarkable not simply because she was a woman in an overwhelmingly male military world, but because she earned the respect of the soldiers around her through repeated acts of courage under fire. The animated video emphasizes that when her regiment was asked who deserved Serbia's highest military decoration for the Battle of Kolubara, her comrades reportedly answered with her name.
This one also hit me a little harder than I expected. Stories of decorated veterans being celebrated during wartime and then forgotten afterward have always bothered me, and Savić's later neglect makes an already remarkable story considerably more bittersweet.
