Fertility & Reproduction 🔥 | NRR, GRR, GFR & TFR Explained | UGC NET/JRF Economics
👶 FERTILITY & REPRODUCTION INDICATORS — COMPLETE QUICK REVISION
In this video, we revise 4 important demographic and fertility indicators that are highly relevant for UGC NET Economics, UGC NET JRF and other Economics competitive examinations.
This visual and exam-focused revision helps you understand the difference between NRR, GRR, GFR and TFR and quickly identify the correct concept in PYQ-based questions.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🔥 CONCEPTS COVERED
1️⃣ NRR — NET REPRODUCTION RATE
• Net Reproduction Rate
• Average number of daughters born to a woman
• Considers age-specific fertility rates
• Considers mortality rates
• Measures replacement of mothers by daughters
• Important indicator of population replacement
📌 KEY POINT:
NRR = 1 → Each woman is replaced by one surviving daughter → Population replacement is achieved.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
2️⃣ GFR — GROSS FERTILITY RATE
• Gross Fertility Rate
• Measures total live births per 1,000 women aged 15–49 years in a year
• Does not consider age-specific fertility rates
• Does not directly incorporate mortality
• Useful for measuring fertility levels
📌 EXAM TRAP:
GFR is less precise than age-specific fertility measures for understanding population replacement.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
3️⃣ TFR — TOTAL FERTILITY RATE
• Total Fertility Rate
• Average number of children a woman is expected to have during her lifetime
• Based on current age-specific fertility rates
• Important indicator of fertility behaviour
• Replacement-level fertility is approximately 2.1 in many developed-country contexts
📌 QUICK MEMORY:
TFR → Average children per woman over her reproductive lifetime.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
4️⃣ GRR — GROSS REPRODUCTION RATE
• Gross Reproduction Rate
• Measures the average number of daughters a woman would have
• Based on age-specific fertility rates
• Counts only female births
• Does NOT account for mortality
📌 EXAM TRAP:
GRR = 1 → One daughter per woman on average, but survival to reproductive age is NOT guaranteed.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🧠 NRR vs GRR — MOST IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE
GRR → Counts female births only
NRR → Counts surviving daughters and therefore considers mortality
🔥 Remember:
GRR = Female births
NRR = Surviving daughters
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📊 QUICK REVISION
👩 NRR → Net reproduction → Female replacement + mortality
👶 GFR → Live births per 1,000 women aged 15–49
👩👧 TFR → Average number of children per woman
👧 GRR → Average number of daughters per woman, without mortality adjustment
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🎯 IMPORTANT EXAM TRAPS
✔ NRR considers mortality
✔ GRR does not consider mortality
✔ TFR is based on age-specific fertility rates
✔ GFR measures live births per 1,000 women aged 15–49
✔ NRR = 1 indicates replacement-level population dynamics
✔ GRR = 1 does not guarantee replacement because mortality is ignored
✔ Replacement-level fertility is commonly taken as approximately 2.1 in developed-country contexts

🔥 EXAM REVISION FORMULA
GRR → Female births
NRR → Surviving daughters
GFR → Live births / 1,000 women aged 15–49
TFR → Average children per woman
