The Department of English and Culture Studies, Mizoram University organized a two day national seminar on “Representations of Disability in Literature and Culture” during 25th-26th May, 2023. The seminar focused upon the various representations of disability in literature, culture, society, and politics and it aims to widen the scope of our understanding of what it means to function in the normal-abnormal binary, how notions of ‘normal’ and its definitions can be expanded, and the need to re-examine slogans like “better off dead than disabled”. The seminar also engaged with various representations, methodologies and approaches on disability on various fronts like the arts, in performance, in law, in academia, in literature, in the media while also linking them to complex explorations through race, gender and class.
