The story of Henry Brown, who escaped from slavery in Richmond, Virginia, after his family was sold, by having himself mailed to Philadelphia in 1849. Henry "Box" Brown, who started touring with the box after his escape, described the journey in the song "Escape from Slavery," sang to the tune of a popular minstrel song. Both this song and the Hymn of Thanksgiving that he sang when getting out of the box were printed and sold at the time.
The video of the story, told with shadow puppets and a scrolling screen, may be used in classrooms and churches. Instruction how to make puppets, as well as primary sources and scores of the original music are available at http://www.pasttimeshistory.com/henry... .
