More about Joey DeFrancesco
Raised in Philadelphia, Joey DeFrancesco was a world-renowned jazz organist, multi-instrumentalist, and five-time Grammy® Award nominee who single-handedly reignited the organ jazz renaissance in the late 1980s.
Learning from his father, "Papa" John DeFrancesco, Joey was playing by age four and sitting in with Philadelphia legends before joining Miles Davis on tour as one of his youngest recruits.
Regarded by the Chicago Tribune as dominating the instrument like no other of his generation, his signature style blends traditional jazz and blues roots with a distinct, modern approach.
A master of the vintage B3 Hammond organ, Leslie speaker, and walking left-hand bass lines, DeFrancesco’s virtuosic talent extended to the trumpet, piano, and tenor saxophone.
Over a prolific career featuring more than 30 albums as a leader, he collaborated with icons like Ray Charles, Van Morrison, and George Benson. Honored with inductions into the Hammond Organ Hall of Fame and Philadelphia Music Walk of Fame, DeFrancesco consistently topped DownBeat polls while sharing his passion with listeners nationwide as host of SiriusXM’s "Organized.
Hammond B-3: Manufactured by the Hammond Organ Company starting in 1955, it became the gold standard instrument for jazz, blues, soul, gospel, and classic rock.
