Andrew Mountbatten Windsor is not going down without a fight.
The former prince has been granted a judicial review at the High Court, challenging the search warrants that allowed Thames Valley Police to raid his home on the Sandringham estate and Royal Lodge, his former residence in Windsor Great Park. It is the first time a member of the royal family has challenged the lawfulness of criminal proceedings against them since Charles I in 1649 (and we all know how that ended).
This is hugely, hugely significant. If the court finds the searches were unlawful, that would effectively be the end of the case. And it is a case that has always looked tenuous to me. Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, over allegations that he shared sensitive information with Jeffrey Epstein while he was trade envoy. He has not been charged with anything, he vigorously denies the accusations against him, and the American government has shown no appetite for handing over the original Epstein files. You cannot prosecute a man on the basis of a pile of partially redacted documents put on a website.
In this video I explain the likely grounds for his challenge, why the timing is so convenient for him, and why reports that the Earl and Countess of Leicester have had Andrew to dinner tell us he is being eased back into polite society. The great landed families of north Norfolk would never cross the King. With the shooting season about to begin, the real tell will be whether Andrew gets a family day at Sandringham this winter. That cannot happen without the King's consent.
But the bigger point is this: all of my sources who know Andrew insist he believes he is completely innocent, and he is now prepared to fight like a cornered rat. That is a nightmare for the Palace and the police, because it ends one of two ways. Either the case is dropped and the whole scandal explodes again, or he is charged and goes to court, angry and betrayed, ready to tear everything down to clear his name.
Let me know in the comments whether you think Andrew should be back on the shooting field this winter, and subscribe to The Royalist for the inside track on the royal family.
