Most often, tonttu can refer to elf-like creatures that guard, help or protect something or somebody. Different kinds of elves exist in Finnish folklore in addition to the forest elves. Most of the farmhouse buildings had their own guardian elf. There were sauna elves, mill elves, granary elves, shed elves, cowshed elves and stable elves. Of course there were home elves as well.
