François Doisy: Cinquième Étude en mi mineur

François Doisy (Previously known as "Charles") was a five string guitar virtuoso, that passed away in Paris in 1807. His method Principe Généraux de la Guitare contains lots of valuable information about performance practice of music written in his times. In the back of Principes Généraux there are 14 "Etudes pour la Guitare". (studies for the guitar) I found them very interesting both technically and musically. Not only are they good studies, they also tells us a lot about what Charles Doisy thought was important to work on to become a good musician. I hope you as a listener also finds this music interesting. I have chosen to begin my journey with the goal of recording all 14 Doisy studies, and share them with the world. Here is the fifth study in e minor. According to Christian Schubart´s "Ideen zu einer Aesthetik der tonkunst" from 1806, e minor as a tonality was regarded as "Naïve, womanly innocent declaration of love, lament without grumbling; sighs accompanied by few tears; this key speaks of the imminent hope of resolving in the pure happiness of C major." When reading this you also will hear that this study actually resolves into C-major, before ending again in e-minor. This music was recorded at "Lokalet" at Landøy. A small island in the south of Norway. I edited in some scenery from the beautiful island in the video. Back in 1919 (when "Lokalet" was built) the island had 82 all year inhabitants. Today all the houses are used as summer houses. François Doisy also wrote two guitar concertos, that are amongst the earliest concertos in the history of the guitar.
