East Texas, July 1931. A livestock claims adjuster from Nacogdoches drives out to a stretch of piney woods that never quite made the maps — six missing-cattle claims from farms that all share one border. At the end of a road called the Bledsoe Cut, past a wired gate and a piece of tin with a name punched into it, he finds a family that has been there since 1868, a sawmill that stops mid-stroke when it hears a stranger's engine, and a woman at a hand pump who will decide, in one silent minute, to save his life.
This is the story of Roscoe Culpepper, Duane Kilgore of the Texas Rangers, and a ledger pulled from the bottom of a dry well with forty-one names in it.
Some cases the sheriff signs off with the wrong word. This is one of them.
