Some improvements can make a big difference. Others may not give you your money back. In this video, I walk through 7 things I recommend homeowners do before putting their house on the market: Declutter and depersonalize — Clear countertops, remove unnecessary furniture, pack away unused toys and make the home feel more spacious. Deep clean the house — Don't forget baseboards, ceiling fans, return vents, areas underneath furniture and other places that are easy to overlook. Improve your curb appeal — Pull weeds, freshen mulch or landscaping, mow the lawn and make sure the front porch creates a great first impression. Fix the little things — Loose handles, missing cabinet pulls, leaking faucets and burned-out light bulbs may seem insignificant, but several small issues can make buyers wonder how well the home has been maintained. Be careful with paint — Fresh paint can help, but a poor paint job can actually make things worse. You don't necessarily need to repaint the entire house. Don't automatically renovate — An outdated kitchen or bathroom doesn't always need to be remodeled before selling. Depending on your home and neighborhood, you could spend far more on a renovation than it adds to your sale price. Get your house photo-ready — Most buyers will see your home online before they ever walk through the front door. Great presentation and professional photography can help turn online views into actual showings. The goal isn't to make your house perfect. It's to focus your time and money on the things that can make the biggest impact when you sell. This is especially important if you already own a home and are planning to buy another one. Getting your current house ready ahead of time can put you in a much better position to move quickly when you find the next house.
