Somewhere across a sector of space, a silence is spreading. Not the absence of sound—the absence of everything that makes sound matter. Soldiers drop their weapons and forget why they held them. Navigators go blind to the stars. Cities stand empty and perfect, lights burning in buildings no one remembers entering. The very thing that keeps humanity alive, that powers their ships and shields and gods, is being methodically switched off. And no one in the Imperium can stop it, because the thing doing it has already spent sixty million years dead and did not mind at all.
This is what happens when you hand an unkillable machine empire the one weapon the galaxy never learned to fear: the power to kill the Warp itself.
Why blackstone—called noctilith by those who still speak its name—is unique in the entire setting: it dampens the Immaterium, thins the grip of the psychic ocean on reality, and in sufficient quantities can carve out pockets of realspace where the Warp simply cannot reach.
Why the Imperium has known this works for ten thousand years: Cadia, the fortress world standing against the Eye of Terror, was protected by a network of colossal blackstone pylons of Necron design, one kilometre tall with half a kilometre buried underground, threaded with tunnels so vast that no servitor sent to map them has ever returned.
What the thirteen Black Crusades were actually about: Abaddon the Despoiler was not trying to conquer Cadia—he was trying to destroy the pylons, understanding what the Imperium was slow to accept: a wall against the Warp is a wall against Chaos itself.
Why Cadia fell and half the galaxy went dark: Abaddon succeeded, overloading the pylon network with raw Warp energy, tearing the barrier that had held for ten thousand years and opening the Great Rift—a wound of pure Chaos that plunged half of Imperial space into darkness where the Astronomican's light cannot reach.
Why Necrons are the only faction that can wield this power: sixty million years ago they burned away their flesh and poured what remained into undying metal, but in the process their souls were devoured by the star-gods they trusted, leaving them with no soul and casting no shadow in the Warp—invisible to Chaos, immune to possession, untouchable to the Dark Gods themselves.
