For three days, the man calling himself Peter Bergmann repeatedly left his Sligo hotel carrying a purple plastic bag that appeared full. Detailed reporting later counted thirteen exits. Each time, he returned without whatever he had carried out—and no available camera showed where it went.
This documentary follows the evidence through his arrival from Derry, the false Vienna address entered in the hotel register, the repeated bag journeys, ten international-rate stamps, a post-office recording that could not be recovered, and a final trip to Rosses Point. Days after reaching Sligo, his body was found on the beach without identification. Labels had been removed from his clothing, and several possessions seen earlier were missing.
Gardaí ruled out foul play. Published reporting on the inquest states that he had advanced prostate cancer and died from acute cardiac arrest; it also reports that the examination did not show the classical findings of saltwater drowning. Yet the medical evidence did not answer the central mystery: who he really was, why he concealed his identity, or what disappeared inside those bags.
“Peter Bergmann” remains an unconfirmed identity. Locate International now presents him as Sligo Man, and both Locate International and An Garda Síochána have appealed for information that could restore his real name.
This is not a story about forcing a theory onto a stranger’s final days. It is a careful reconstruction of what the cameras, witnesses, recovered property and medical findings establish—and where the evidence stops.
