This Munich 3D timelapse follows nearly nine centuries on the river Isar: from a hamlet of monks and Henry the Lion's market town in 1158 to a city of 1.5 million people. Watch the history of Munich in 8 minutes, built on the real street map of the city. Watch the monks on the Petersbergl, the salt-road bridge, two rings of medieval walls, the great fire of 1327, the Isar Gate, the red-brick Frauenkirche with its 99-metre towers, St Michael, the Residenz, the Swedish army of 1632, the Column of Mary, the Theatine Church and Nymphenburg Palace. Then the English Garden, the walls coming down, the Kingdom of Bavaria, the first Oktoberfest in 1810, Ludwigstraße and the Siegestor, Königsplatz, the railway, the Bavaria statue, Maximilianstraße and the New Town Hall. Then the growing city of Schwabing and Haidhausen, the Angel of Peace, the Deutsches Museum, the revolution of 1918–19, the Beer Hall Putsch, the Nazi years, the Munich Agreement, the White Rose, the air raids of 1944–45, the Americans, the rubble women, a city of one million, the Olympic Park and the Games of 1972, Neuperlach, Riem, the Allianz Arena and the Oktoberfest today. ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 1000–1100 – The Isar · At the Monks 00:13 1158–1175 – Henry the Lion · The First Wall 00:26 1255–1285 – The Wittelsbachs · The Second Wall 00:41 1327–1328 – The Great Fire · An Emperor’s City 00:56 1385–1468 – The New Fortress · The Frauenkirche 01:13 1470–1505 – The Old Town Hall · One Capital 01:25 1583–1600 – St Michael · The Residenz 01:40 1607 – Old Peter · The Hofbräuhaus 01:53 1619–1632 – The Star Fortress · The Swedes 02:10 1634–1663 – The Column of Mary · The Theatine Church 02:24 1664 – Nymphenburg 02:34 1705–1789 – The Sendling Christmas · The English Garden 02:47 1791–1806 – The Walls Come Down · A Kingdom 02:59 1810–1816 – The First Oktoberfest · Ludwig’s Avenue 03:16 1826–1830 – The Pinakothek · Königsplatz 03:31 1839–1843 – The Railway · Bavaria 03:43 1847–1849 – Lola Montez · The Gate of Victory 03:56 1854–1857 – The Glass Palace · Maximilianstrasse 04:11 1867–1871 – The New Town Hall · The City Grows 04:29 1896–1900 – The Angel of Peace · Trams and Bridges 04:43 1906–1911 – The Deutsches Museum · The Blue Rider 04:55 1918–1923 – Revolution · The Beer Hall Putsch 05:11 1933–1938 – Capital of the Movement · The Munich Agreement 05:26 1939–1943 – Thirteen Minutes · The White Rose 05:38 1944 – The Bombs 05:51 1945–1946 – The Americans · The Rubble Women 06:06 1957–1966 – A Million · The Olympic Park 06:24 1971–1972 – U-Bahn and the Pedestrian Zone · The Cheerful Games 06:37 1972 – In Memory · BMW 06:54 1973–1998 – Neuperlach · Riem 07:07 2002–2004 – The Allianz Arena · Nothing Taller Than the Church 07:24 2006–2010 – Ohel Jakob · Oktoberfest 07:39 2026 – Munich Today 07:53 1158–2026 – From a Monks’ Market to a Metropolis 📌 Population figures come from the City of Munich statistical office (historical estimates before 1800, censuses 1871–1987, the residents’ register since 1988); 2026 is an estimate. Streets and buildings follow the real map (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL); individual buildings are representative, not exact, and their heights, colours and dates are estimates. The medieval town, the walls and the war damage are simplified reconstructions from historical plans; trees follow the ESA WorldCover satellite map today and estimates for earlier centuries.
