The nor’easter may be weakening, but the East Coast flooding threat isn’t over yet.
A powerful early-season coastal storm has already caused major flooding, ocean overwash, road closures, power outages, tree damage, dangerous surf, and evacuations from North Carolina to New York and New England. On the Outer Banks, Highway 12 was cut off by ocean water, while parts of New Jersey experienced some of their highest coastal water levels since Superstorm Sandy.
But the biggest story is what happens after the storm’s peak. The system stalled near the coast, persistent northeast winds continued pushing water into bays and back channels, saturated ground increased the risk of falling trees, and repeated high tides kept bringing another round of flooding.
In this video, we break down why this nor’easter refused to leave, how the full moon and higher-than-normal tides amplified coastal flooding, why some locations approached historic water levels, and what residents along the East Coast should watch over the next 24 hours.
We also cover the difference between this event and Superstorm Sandy, the continuing risks from saturated soil, weakened trees, coastal erosion, power outages, and lingering flooding — plus practical steps you can take to protect your family, vehicle, and home.
⚠️ Conditions can change quickly. Always follow your local National Weather Service office, NOAA tide information, and official emergency alerts for the latest warnings affecting your location.
