Even the magnificent city of Dwarka, associated with Lord Krishna, could not remain forever. According to traditional accounts in the Mahabharata, after Gandhari cursed the Yadava clan, its destruction followed, and Lord Krishna’s earthly incarnation also came to an end. The tradition further describes Dwarka being submerged by the sea. This does not mean that God was helpless. In Hindu devotional traditions, these events are understood through the deeper ideas of divine leela, destiny, the passage of time, and the completion of an incarnation’s purpose. Dwarka has drowned, Shyam, where are You?” expresses the pain of separation from the Divine. It reminds us that palaces, wealth, beauty, power, and worldly achievements cannot remain with us forever. One day, everyone must leave this world.
