M. Turaz is an Indian poet, lyricist and writer whose work spans Hindi cinema, television, music and poetry. Known for his evocative command of Hindi and Urdu-inflected poetic expression, Turaz has established a distinctive place in contemporary Indian popular culture through songs that combine literary depth with cinematic emotion. His professional career began in television, before he moved into Hindi film songwriting. His first major Mumbai assignment as a lyricist came with Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana in 2006. He subsequently worked on films including Jail, Guzaarish, Chakravyuh, Jackpot, Bajirao Mastani, Wazir, Padmaavat, Badla, Marjaavaan, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Mission Majnu and Satyaprem Ki Katha. A Distinctive Voice in Film Music Turaz is particularly recognised for his collaborations with filmmaker and composer Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His lyrics have featured in several visually and musically ambitious films associated with Bhansali, including Guzaarish, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi. Among his best-known songs are “Aayat,” “Udi,” “Tere Liye Mere Kareem,” “Ghoomar,” “Binte Dil,” “Khalibali,” “Tum Na Aaye” and “Tera Zikr.” His work on Padmaavat brought particular attention, with “Ghoomar,” “Binte Dil” and “Khalibali” becoming prominent songs from the film's soundtrack. His writing is often marked by a strong poetic vocabulary, romantic imagery, spiritual undertones and an ability to adapt classical poetic sensibilities to contemporary cinematic storytelling. Beyond Conventional Lyric Writing Turaz's creative work extends beyond mainstream film lyrics. He has also worked as a poet and scriptwriter and has contributed to television and music projects. His poetry anthology Lamhe was published by Poets Corner Group. His career is notable for moving between literary poetry and popular entertainment without losing the character of a poet. Whether writing for a historical epic, a romantic composition, a dramatic film or an independent song, his work frequently retains an emphasis on imagery, emotion and lyrical expression.
