Central Florida Zoo Geriatric Animal Management, presented for the 2026 ABMA Behavior Month

When working with geriatric animals, sometimes it is hard to overcome past experiences. Our team at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens have been working on increasing trust and relationship building with our animals using positive reinforcement. From a 57yr old crocodile, a 45yr old spider monkey, a 35yr old hornbill, 12yr old bears, and a 22yr old Magpie Jay and a 26yr old black vulture with a 6yr flight hiatus back into flight. Our team has been progressing with training these animals in ways that staff never thought would be possible. This has built up our own confidence and also increased the wellness of the animals in our care.
