Program notes from Victor:
Donde La Memoria Baila is a piece for solo piano that was commissioned by Madeline Styskal for Voices in Transit, a program that explores cultural exchanges in and through music. In the 19th century, German and Czech immigrants brought dance styles such as Waltz, Polka, Redowa, Schottische, and Mazurka to the regions of northeast Mexico and south Texas. Regional folk musicians began merging these genres with traditional styles such as Corridos, Rancheras, Huapangos, Boleros, and Sones to develop what we now know as “Musica Norteña,” which I grew up admiring. Rather than simply making an arrangement or writing a piece explicitly in the style of Norteño music, I sought to capture the unyielding and virtuosic, yet lyrical and passionate aspects of the dynamic Norteño style using contemporary classical idioms.
