I Bought Lenses I Don’t Need | DZOFilm Arcana 1.5X Anamorphic

Most of my career has been spent creating commercial and corporate work where there’s always a purpose behind the image — a client, a message, a campaign, a deliverable. The new DZOFilm Arcana 1.5X anamorphic lenses are different for me. I didn’t buy them because I needed another tool for work. I bought them because I wanted something unfamiliar. Something that would make me curious about making images again simply for the sake of making them. When I unboxed the Arcana set, I put one on my Canon C50 and started filming Bert while she worked on one of her projects. No lights. No ND filters. No preparation. All handheld. And I got plenty wrong. I sacrificed the cloudy sky to expose for Bert. I should have used a polarizer to control the reflections in her glasses. My handheld technique wasn’t stable enough for what I wanted. I even managed to shoot Full Frame instead of Open Gate. None of that mattered as much as what happened next. I kept looking at the monitor. There was something about what I was seeing that I really liked. An ordinary weekend moment started to feel less like something I was recording and more like something I was remembering. When I showed Bert the footage, she said: “I can see why you like those lenses.” That pretty much sums up my first experience with the Arcana. I’m not an anamorphic expert, and this isn’t a lens review. I’m learning an entirely different visual language — and that’s precisely what makes these lenses interesting to me. Sometimes you don’t need another piece of equipment for work. Sometimes you need something that makes you curious again. This wasn’t intended to be a scientific lens test or an objective representation of the Arcana lenses. It’s simply how I wanted these images to feel.
