What does the Bible actually say about honouring your pastor? Galatians 6:6 makes it clear that supporting those who teach God's Word is not optional. It is a direct command for every believer. But honoring your pastor goes much deeper than most people realize.
A pastor is not simply someone who speaks on Sunday mornings. According to Hebrews 13:17, he is a teacher of the Word, a watchman over souls, a father in the faith, and an intercessor who prays for his congregation without ceasing. He spends hours in study so his people can be spiritually fed. He loses sleep over the souls in his care. He will one day stand before God and give an account for those entrusted to him.
The Word he teaches does three powerful things in your life. It feeds you, as Jeremiah 3:15 promises through God-appointed shepherds. It grows you, as 2 Peter 3:18 calls every believer to grow in grace and knowledge. And it corrects you, as 2 Timothy 3:16 confirms that all Scripture is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness.
Honouring your pastor is not only about money. Biblical honour includes covering your pastor in prayer, speaking well of your church and its leadership, winning souls, serving faithfully, and obeying the Word being taught. Ephesians 6:19 shows the Apostle Paul asking his congregation to pray for him just as he prayed for them. First Thessalonians 5:12-13 calls believers to esteem their leaders very highly in love for the work they carry on your behalf.
When you honour the man or woman God has placed over your soul, you are honoring God Himself. First Samuel 2:30 promises that those who honour God will be honoured by Him in return. The blessing you withhold from His servant is ultimately a blessing you withhold from yourself.
If you have ever wondered what it truly means to be an active and faithful member of a church community, this is a message that will challenge and encourage you to move from passive attendance to genuine partnership with those God has placed over your soul.
