In this lesson you will learn the graphical method for concurrent forces: how to find the resultant and the equilibrant by drawing, using a scale, Bow's notation, a space diagram and a force diagram. Every step is shown slowly so you can copy it into your own book.
By the end of this lesson you will be able to:
1. Draw a space diagram
2. Use Bow's notation
3. Draw a force diagram to scale
4. Find the resultant and the equilibrant
Worked examples:
Example 1: 30 N to the right and 40 N straight up. Answer: R = 50 N at 53°, E = 50 N at 233°
Example 2: 25 N at 135°, 30 N at 60° and 20 N at 0°. Answer: R = 47 N at 68°, E = 47 N at 248°
Example 3: a 100 N lamp hanging from two cords at 30° and 60°. Answer: T1 = 50 N, T2 = 87 N
You need: ruler, protractor, sharp pencil and set squares.
