Church & Society: Who Is Responsible? | Walter Nandalike & Bishop Leslie D’Souza Speak

Recently, I had the opportunity to be the Guest of Honour at a Catholic event organised in the Diocese of Udupi, in the presence of Rt. Rev. Dr. Leslie D’Souza, Bishop of Udupi Diocese. In my speech, I spoke quite openly about some of the issues that we often hesitate to talk about within our own community. I spoke about family property disputes, increasing divorce cases and the lack of awareness among people about government benefits and welfare schemes available to them. I also appealed to the Church to give more importance to these social issues during Masses, sermons and retreats. I strongly believe that the Church has an important role not only in guiding us spiritually, but also in helping families and society deal with the problems we face today. Bishop Leslie D’Souza responded by saying that these issues cannot be the responsibility of the clergy alone. Priests and laypeople have to work together. He also said something I appreciated. He pointed out that priests are also human beings and that people should question them. He described me as someone who is straightforward and asks blunt questions, and said that such questions are needed today. I have put both my speech and the Bishop’s response together in this video. My intention is not to criticise anyone. I believe that sometimes we need to ask uncomfortable questions if we genuinely want our community to improve. The Church, clergy and laypeople all have a role to play. The important thing is that we should be willing to discuss these issues openly and work together.
