There’s a gap in the picnic basket, and nobody knows who made it. That’s the first case, and the detective kit comes out. Kids at home pick up an imaginary magnifying glass and look closely at the scene. Near the empty spot there’s a pinkish smear, a few tiny black seeds, and the faint smell of something sweet. Which fruit was in the basket? From A to Z there are 26 cases, one for every letter, and every one ends with a solved mystery.
Evidence is what makes this different from a plain guessing game. Instead of a single clue, children have to look at several small things and put them together: the shape of a peel, the color of a stain, the number of seeds. Gathering details and drawing a conclusion is a real thinking skill, and it’s the same one early readers use when a picture and a few letters lead them to a word.
