Did OpenAI's AI just solve a $1,000,000 Millennium Prize problem? The Navier–Stokes controversy, explained from scratch: the math, the proofs, and the fight over credit. No formal math background needed. The Navier–Stokes equations describe how every liquid and gas moves, from the air over a wing to the blood in your veins. Since 2000, a $1 million prize has waited for anyone who can prove whether they always stay smooth, or can "blow up". In September 2026, mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge reported proofs for three related fluid equations. Hours later, OpenAI announced an AI-produced, 166-page proof for Navier–Stokes itself, with an outside push. Then came a public dispute over credit between Buckmaster and OpenAI's Sébastien Bubeck, and reactions from Terence Tao and others. At the time of publishing this video, none of these proofs are peer reviewed yet, and the version with no push at all is still open.
