Hear the full collection of beautiful cello melodies 👉   • Most Beautiful Cello Melodies   Francesco Maria Veracini wrote this Largo in the early 1700s, and it aches from the first note - a slow, singing lament in E minor, the sound of loss set down in music. It has none of the brightness we expect from the Baroque. In his time he was considered one of the greatest violinists in Europe - so brilliant that hearing him play reportedly drove the young Tartini to lock himself away and rebuild his own technique from scratch. But his life turned dark. In 1722, in Dresden, he fell from a high window and survived with a limp he carried for the rest of his days; the reasons behind the fall have been argued about for three hundred years. Later he lost his two treasured Stradivari violins, which he had named after saints, in a shipwreck. He died in Florence in 1768, poor and largely forgotten, a giant of his era who slipped out of memory almost completely. Maybe that is why this music sounds the way it does. You do not need to know any of it to feel the grief in these phrases. But knowing it, the Largo becomes something more than beautiful. It becomes the voice of a man who understood exactly what it means to lose. In this performance, I play the Veracini Largo arranged for cello and piano. If you have never heard it before, I am glad to be the one to introduce you. 🎼 About the piece: This Largo comes from Veracini's Violin Sonata in E minor, Op. 2 No. 8, from the Sonate accademiche, published in 1744. It is best known today to violinists through the Suzuki repertoire.
