He is the last one to arrive. On other nights we have looked up at Cassiopeia the queen, at Andromeda their daughter, at Perseus who came for her, and at Cetus, the sea monster sent to take her. Cepheus is the father, and with him the whole family is finally on the sky at once. The thing worth finding in this little house sits near its lower edge: the Garnet Star, Mu Cephei. William Herschel noted its deep garnet colour in 1783, and the name has stayed with it ever since — through binoculars the red is unmistakable, which is rare for something that faint to the naked eye. It is a red supergiant, and one of the largest stars we know of: better than a thousand times the width of the sun. Put it where the sun is and its surface would reach out past the orbit of Jupiter, with the earth somewhere deep inside it. Its light left before any of this was here, and tonight it arrives at the mouth of a cave. Play at low volume as you fall asleep, or keep it under your practice.
