Best Cover 3 Zone Pressure/Concepts for 3-4 Defenses | Glazier Clinics

Speaker Name: Mike Mendenhall Speaker Position: Outside Linebacker Coach Speaker School: Princeton University In this video, Coach Mendenhall from Princeton University outlines some variations of a 3-4 defense that he implements and the ways you can create pressure from a 3-4 Defense utilizing a Cover 3 Zone Scheme. Coach Mendenhall describes two variations of pressure that you can create from the 3-4 defense. The first is a 5-man pressure, “Odd Bear”, that includes blitzing the two middle linebackers. The second blitz is called “Odd Copperhead”, which is a blitz with the weak side Outside Linebacker and Linebacker to the weak side. On the other side of the blitz, Coach Mendenhall describes the important zone concepts necessary to protect your defense against the passing game. When blitzing you must anticipate the quick passing game. Some things you can coach your players on are to slow down your cornerbacks and safeties, who otherwise would be backpedaling to their respective deep third zone. With a blitz, you don’t want them to bail to their zone so quickly so that they can watch the quarterback if he passes early and has an opportunity to make a play on the ball. He also addresses the seam defenders. In Cover 3, the seams are one of the vulnerable spots on the field for Quarterbacks to attack. So, the defenders that have that zone responsibilities must protect that zone, so that they are not exposing the defense to big plays. This and so much more are covered in this great introduction on creating pressure from a 3-4 Cover 3 Zone Blitz Defense! #### Coaches who win train with Glazier.
