Hey players, DJay here with another arcade longplay on an arcade hit rail shooter of the mid-80s, Space Harrier.
Description of the game:
Space Harrier is a fantasy themed arcade rail shooter by Sega, released for the arcades in October 1985 (Japan) and in 1986 (internationally) on the Sega Space Harrier arcade hardware. It is Sega's first attempt at rail shooters that inspired many other titles such as After Burner and Galaxy Force. It was ported on over 20 several home computers (Armstad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Amiga) and gaming consoles (Sega Genesis, PC Engine/TurboGraphx 16, NES), included in several Sega Ages compilations as well as a Japanese exclusive 3D remake of the arcade game on PlayStation 2 (Sega Ages Vol.2). The Fantasy Zone mentioned in the game was later the title of the 1986 shmup set in the same universe. Harrier is later mentioned in Fantasy Zone II: The Tears Of Opa-Opa's bad ending. The game originally featured a playable spaceship during early development of the game before changing the player character to a human (such concept for a playable craft was later used for games like After Burner and Galaxy Force). Harrier's "ouch" voice clip was later reused in 1989 Turbo Outrun, though with an altered pitch.
The game has players control Harrier, a human equipped with a jet propelled laser cannon. The objective is to clear all 18 stages by shooting down whatever enemies or hazards appear on screen to score points, while avoiding collisions with enemies, as well as their projectiles and hazards placed throughout (some obstacles only momentarily stops the player if they collide, though does not knock the player down.) At the end of a stage, players must attack the boss by aiming and shooting at their weak points before proceeding to the next stage. In bonus stages, players will control Harrier's pet dragon, Uriah, and attempt to destroy as many obstacles as possible. In the game's 18th and final level, players are greeted to a boss rush where they must destroy all the previous bosses again (excluding the unique boss from stage 17) to clear the game. If Harrier is shot or crashes into a large obstacle, the player loses a life and will continue from that point onwards.
