THE LAST THING YOU LEFT WAS ME
An Original Cajun Country Heartbreak Song
By Becky Bahija Sullivan
She took her clothes.
She took her pictures.
She took the dog and drove away.
But those weren't the things that hurt the most.
“The Last Thing You Left Was Me” is a Louisiana Cajun-country heartbreak story about a man discovering that sometimes the greatest loss after a relationship ends isn't the person who walked away—it's the person you used to be when they loved you.
He remembers dancing with her in a little Breaux Bridge dance hall, laughing together, driving Louisiana roads, and sharing an ordinary life with their little long-haired chocolate-brown Chihuahua. Now those same places are filled with memories of a happier man he barely recognizes.
His mother asks where his smile went.
Every pair of headlights still makes him look up.
The accordion still takes him back to Saturday nights when everything felt right.
And slowly he understands:
“But how do you get back somebody
When that somebody was you?”
Through the bayou, the dance hall, the Louisiana roads, and the man who keeps appearing in his memories, this video tells two stories at once—the loss of a woman and the loss of himself.
Because sometimes the cruelest thing someone leaves behind...
is you.
