Pip has invented a game. It is called Hop the Circle, it is played inside a chalk ring on the cobbles, and it is a two player game. Pip plays. Bean plays. Milo watches.
Nobody is mean to Milo. Nobody tells him to go away. He is given the very important job of counting the hops, which is not a very important job, and he stands on the outside of a line somebody drew without thinking about him.
That is what this one is about: not being unkind, but not noticing. It is the harder half of the lesson, and it lands on Pip, who has to work out that she made the rule and so she can make a different one.
"A game gets better when it gets bigger."
The three magic moves from this episode:
1. Look around
2. Change the game
3. Make room
Milo says the thing that most children cannot say out loud: nobody was mean to me, I just was not in it. Then Pip rubs out one bit of the chalk with her shoe, and the ring has a door in it.
We ask you questions in this one and wait for you to answer. Count the players with us. See if you can spot who is not playing. And help us decide where to rub out the circle.
Bean spends the whole episode inventing extra rules that nobody asked for. By the end there are thirteen of them. There is also a duck called Pickle, hiding somewhere new.
A 5-minute story for preschoolers and toddlers about including people, noticing when somebody is left out, and how a game gets better when more people are in it. Watch it together and talk about it afterwards.
