What does “forgiveness” really mean in the original Hebrew of the Bible?
Most Christians know forgiveness as one of the central teachings of Scripture. But when we look beyond the English translation and explore the ancient Hebrew language and biblical world, we discover a much richer picture of what forgiveness meant to the people who first read these Scriptures.
In this episode of Sacred Origins, we explore the Hebrew word סָלַח (sālaḥ), commonly translated as “forgive,” and examine how the Hebrew Bible connects forgiveness with mercy, pardon, sin, covenant, restoration, and reconciliation with God.
We’ll explore passages from the Hebrew Bible and consider how forgiveness was understood within ancient Israelite worship, sacrifice, repentance, and covenant relationship. We’ll also examine related Hebrew concepts and the Jewish context behind Jesus’ teachings on forgiveness.
The goal isn't to say that modern translations are simply wrong. Instead, we're going back to the biblical Hebrew context to discover what can sometimes be hidden behind a single English word.
What did the ancient Hebrews understand when they spoke about forgiveness?
And what might that ancient meaning reveal about the Bible you already know?
