Step in from the snow to a lamplit post office and help sort the night's letters, one quiet cubby at a time. A traveler crosses a snowy square to buy a stamp and is invited to keep Maud the postmistress company. Together they fetch the night sack from the Slow Line, tip it out on the long table and slide each letter into its place on a wall of little wooden cubbies. They puzzle gently over a smudged address, warm a drop of sealing wax, and send one last postcard before he falls asleep on the bench by the stove. The story lasts about 25 minutes. Afterwards the scene stays with you for an hour of a sorting room at night, the stove glowing low, snow falling past a frosted window and the letters resting in their cubbies, so you can drift off without the room going quiet.
