Be prepared.” In Episode 11 of The Impact That Lasts, Dr. Rhonda Gumbs-Savain reconnects with former student Shemicka A., MSN, FNP-C, who has built a career as a Family Nurse Practitioner and entrepreneur providing Mobile Primary Care. Shemicka reflects on a lesson Dr. Savain taught her long before she entered college or began her professional nursing career: how you show up matters. She remembers Dr. Savain coming to class professionally dressed and expecting her students to arrive prepared, ready to learn, and presenting themselves with the same level of professionalism. That lesson stuck. When Shemicka reached college, people noticed. They wanted to know why she was always so prepared and professional. For Shemicka, the answer was simple: “This is what we learned.” What started as an expectation in a high school classroom became a standard Shemicka carried through college, nursing, advanced practice, and ultimately entrepreneurship.
