He was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and became involved in the communist movement at a young age. During World War II, Tito led the Partisans, a communist resistance movement that fought against the Axis powers and their collaborators. His forces gradually gained control over large parts of Yugoslavia and played an important role in the liberation of the country. After World War II, Tito became the leader of the new Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He established a communist government and introduced a political and economic system that was different from the Soviet model. In 1948, Tito broke with Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union, making Yugoslavia an independent communist state. He later became one of the leading figures of the Non-Aligned Movement, which sought to maintain independence from both the Western and Soviet blocs during the Cold War. Tito ruled Yugoslavia for several decades and maintained political stability through a strong central government, while Yugoslavia developed its own form of socialism. His government also restricted political opposition and limited certain political freedoms. Tito remained president of Yugoslavia until his death in 1980. He died in Ljubljana at the age of 87.
