The Famous Bengaluru Landmark: Shree Banashankari Devi TempleEstablished on May 21, 1915, by Somanna Shetty and others, this iconic South Bengaluru temple is deeply woven into the city's culture. The original deity (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati as Shakti Swaroopini seated on a lioness) was brought here directly from the historic Badami shrine.
The Rahukala Custom: In a unique departure from standard Hindu practices, the deity is specifically worshipped during Rahukala (traditionally considered an inauspicious window) on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. Devotees flock here during these hours to light traditional lemon-peel oil lamps to alleviate hardships and invoke blessings for prosperity.
Key Features: The complex houses a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Anjaneya Swamy shrine and a historic stone corridor well whose undrying water is used exclusively for the daily Abhisheka (ritual bathing of the idol).
Darshan Timings: Open daily from 6:00 AM – 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
Crowds peak dramatically on Fridays and during the autumn Navaratri festival.
Location & Travel: Conveniently located right on Kanakapura Main Road, directly opposite the Banashankari Metro Station (Green Line), making it one of the most accessible major temples in the city.
The Ancient Origin: Shree Shakambhari Shakti Peetha (Badami)For those tracing the historical roots of the deity, the ultimate destination is located in Cholachagudda near Badami (Bagalkot district).
History: This is the original and oldest Banashankari temple in India, tracing its roots back to a shrine built in the 7th century AD by the Chalukya kings, who revered the goddess as their Kuladevi (tutelary deity). The current structural template was rebuilt around 1750 by a Maratha chieftain.
Setting & Architecture: Nestled in what was once the Tilakaaranya forest, the temple blends Dravidian and Vijayanagara architectural styles. It features high Deepa Stambhas (lamp towers) and a massive square water tank called the Haridra Tirtha.
Festivals: It is famous for the annual Banashankari Jatre (usually in January/February), a massive cultural fair featuring a grand Rath Yatra (chariot procession), a boat festival (Teppotsava), and a unique festival of vegetables (Palleda Habba).
