“Fripp’s Broken String” is an experimental progressive art-rock song about a broken guitar string that refuses to disappear. Instead, it gathers memories, escapes the quicksand and becomes part of the composition.
The lyrics form an affectionate trail through the King Crimson universe—ancient kings, waiting men, Discipline and Indiscipline, Neal and Jack, dinosaurs, walking in the air, the construction of light, miracles and one final breath. The references gradually become a small mythology of their own: the broken string has witnessed everything and still carries the music forward.
Developed around the author’s original RAW vocal performance, the finished arrangement preserves its natural phrasing, dark Peter Murphy-like timbral core and moments of angular Adrian Belew-like character. The wider progressive setting brings out a warmer, more stately quality reminiscent of Greg Lake, especially as the song approaches “No scarcity of miracles.”
A sincere, playful tribute to musical memory, discipline and the strange things that survive their creators.
Independent tribute. No affiliation with Robert Fripp or King Crimson.
