In 2025 the United States imported 8.6 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day from Canada (EIA), and Canada's Energy Regulator says Canada supplied close to 100% of all US natural gas imports. The value of those imports rose 52% in a single year.
In January 2026, Winter Storm Fern froze American wells: Henry Hub hit a record $30.72 on January 23, storage fell a record 360 Bcf in one week, and imports of Canadian gas hit a record — one year to the day after Davos, where Donald Trump said "We don't need their oil and gas."
Meanwhile LNG Canada in Kitimat, B.C. shipped Canada's first LNG cargo on June 30, 2025, passed 100 cargoes to Asia, and on September 29, 2026 took the decision to double capacity from 14 to 28 million tonnes a year.
