How did scholars identify more than a hundred Upapurāṇa titles across different sources? In Episode 3, we explore the wider world of Upapurāṇa literature: texts that survive, works preserved in manuscripts, titles known through quotations and references, and works considered lost or not currently traceable. The research of R. C. Hazra, particularly Studies in the Upapurāṇas, is an important guide to this subject. Hazra identified more than a hundred titles across the sources he examined. This does not mean that more than a hundred complete texts survive, nor does it establish a universally accepted canon of one hundred Upapurāṇas. This episode examines the difference between traditional enumeration and the broader history of textual transmission, classification, manuscripts, fragments and scholarly evidence.
