Found footage is one genre of horror cinema that has the capacity to become either great or very underwhelming. There is no in between. You will never hear someone say, “Oh, yeah, it is filmed in found footage format, and it is just alright.” The Cloverfield franchise usually occupies a position quite high in this hierarchy, and I said (Note to VA: use air quotes) “usually” because the third movie was not my cup of tea. But the first two films really took me by surprise because the shaky camerawork really uplifted the chaos and suspense, making the experience really fulfilling.
