Sincerely yours, Spectral Anomaly. ✨
The station had been transmitting for decades. No one had ever answered.
Perched on skeletal supports above the barren ground, it stood against the howling winds, its cylindrical shell weathered by time and radiation. It was one of the last autonomous relay outposts, built to receive signals from deep space and filter them for anything... unnatural. But its creators had long since vanished. The facility remained, its cold metal frame humming with purpose. It listened. It recorded. It waited.
When the expedition arrived, the airlock was already open. Not forced—just ajar, as if someone had left in a hurry. The interior was intact. No signs of struggle, no bodies, only an eerie silence broken by the occasional flicker of the console lights. The logs were fragmented, corrupted by an unknown interference. The last recorded entry simply read: "It has learned to speak."
Outside, the wind shifted. Static crackled through their comms, a low, almost imperceptible frequency that made their skulls vibrate. One of them—Doctor Kessler—dropped his equipment and staggered back. He clutched his head, whispering something they couldn’t understand. His lips moved, but his words weren’t his own.
Then, the station responded.
A transmission erupted from its antennas—an impossible, ancient frequency that hadn’t been detected in centuries. It wasn’t random. It wasn’t interference. It was something else.
The team turned to flee, but the ground beneath them pulsed. The rocks trembled. The station, once an inert listener, had become something more. Something aware. The wind died instantly, the air charged with a presence they couldn’t name. The transmission grew louder, burrowing into their minds, unraveling their thoughts.
One by one, they stopped moving.
The last thing the base cameras recorded was their silhouettes standing still under the darkening sky, their heads tilted slightly as if listening. The transmission had found them.
And now, it had learned to speak.
