It's IMPOSSIBLE This Is Marble, and It's 273 Years Old A 32-year-old sculptor, one block of Carrara marble, and a transparent veil that seems impossible to carve in stone. For centuries the legend said the prince who ordered it taught him a secret chemical process. A bank receipt from 1752 shows the legend is false, and the truth is even harder to believe. In this video we uncover the secrets of the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino, in the Sansevero Chapel in Naples: the perceptual trick behind the transparent veil, the almost novelistic story of the alchemist prince who commissioned it, the academic debate between two opposite readings of the work, and the recent attempt to replicate it with a robotic arm. In this video you will learn: — The legend of the alchemical formula, and the 1752 bank receipt that disproves it — The perceptual trick (backed by Scientific American) behind any veil carved in marble — Who Raimondo di Sangro really was, the alchemist prince who ordered the work — The debate between two historians: pure virtuosity, or theological threshold? — The 2023 attempt to replicate the work with a robotic arm in Carrara Chapters: (add after final edit) Technical details: Title: Veiled Christ (Cristo velato) Artist: Giuseppe Sanmartino (Naples, 1720 – 1793) Date: 1753 Medium: Carrara marble, 180 cm long Location: Museo Cappella Sansevero, Naples, Italy Main sources: — Museo Cappella Sansevero, technical sheet and historical archive — Historical Archive of the Bank of Naples, payment receipt (December 16, 1752) — Scientific American, technical study on veiled sculptures (reference: Giovanni Strazza) — University College London, analysis of the Anatomical Machines (2008) — Rudolf Wittkower, Art and Architecture in Italy 1600–1750 (Pelican History of Art) — Ruth Lockhart, University College Dublin, research on veil iconography As always on this channel, every fact is checked against serious sources, separating what is confirmed, what is theory, and what remains an open mystery.
