Welcome back to Southern Fried Sobriety!
I'm 51 years old, and after 36 years of drinking, I'm learning that putting down the alcohol is only part of the battle.
In this episode, I open up about one of my biggest fears in recovery: becoming a “dry drunk.” I'm talking about being sober but still feeling unhappy, withdrawn, unmotivated, and disconnected from the people I care about.
Physically, I'm feeling better without alcohol. Mentally, though, I'm still trying to find my way. I've been dealing with waves of depression, anxiety, and a lack of motivation. Sometimes, after work, I don't feel like talking to anybody—not even the people closest to me.
And that concerns me.
One of the reasons I drank was that alcohol seemed to help me loosen up, socialize, joke around, and escape my problems for a while. But it also kept me from being fully present with my children and created consequences I can no longer ignore.
Now I have to learn how to enjoy life, connect with people, and show up for my family without relying on alcohol.
In this episode, I talk honestly about:
My fear of becoming a dry drunk
Why getting sober doesn't automatically solve every problem
Anxiety, depression, and feeling withdrawn in early sobriety
Why I sometimes don't feel like talking to people
How alcohol affected my relationship with my children and family
Finding motivation to become more active and reconnect with life
Learning to socialize and have fun without drinking
Reaching 48–49 days sober and approaching my previous record of 58 days
I'm not claiming to have all the answers. I'm still figuring things out, and some days are harder than others. But I know I don't want to simply stop drinking and continue living a life where I feel disconnected from everyone around me.
I want to get better—not just at staying sober, but at living sober.
Have you ever felt like you were just going through the motions after quitting alcohol? Have you struggled with motivation, anxiety, or feeling unlike yourself? I'd genuinely like to hear about your experience in the comments.
This channel is my way of holding myself accountable, being honest about the good and the bad, and hopefully helping somebody else who's fighting the same battle.
Thanks for watching Southern Fried Sobriety. Like, subscribe, and join me as I continue figuring this out one day at a time.
Keep on keeping on, and God bless!
