Beneath the Channel Tunnel, where Britain’s railway network meets mainland Europe, a powerful electric locomotive was built for a bold new era: the British Rail Class 92.
Designed in the 1990s by Brush Traction and ABB, the Class 92 was created for one of the most demanding railway environments in Europe. It had to haul heavy freight through the Channel Tunnel, work on both 25 kV overhead wires and 750 V third rail, meet strict tunnel safety rules, and power the planned Nightstar sleeper trains between Britain and the continent.
But the future it was built for never fully arrived.
In this documentary, we uncover the story of the Class 92, one of Britain’s most powerful and specialised electric locomotives. From the optimism of the Channel Tunnel era to the cancellation of Nightstar, years of storage, freight work, export to Europe and revival on the Caledonian Sleeper, this is a story of ambition, underuse, survival and reinvention.
🔍 What you’ll learn:
Why British Rail needed a dual-voltage locomotive for the Channel Tunnel
How the Class 92 was designed for heavy freight and international sleeper trains
Why the Nightstar sleeper project was cancelled before entering service
How privatisation, route restrictions and lower-than-expected tunnel freight affected the fleet
Why some Class 92s were exported or spent years in storage
How the locomotives found a second life on the Caledonian Sleeper and international freight
From cross-Channel freight to London-to-Scotland sleeper trains, the Class 92’s story is not one of simple failure. It is the story of a locomotive built for a future that changed before it could arrive, then adapted for a railway world very different from the one British Rail had imagined.
