Brunsviga compound calculator 1918

Mechanical calculator from the collection of The National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, accession number TM 26047. The calculator was one of two ordered by The Swedish State Railways in 1918 and was used for preparing statistics on freight tonnage and distance travelled in regard to axle loading. The two Brunsviga units house five separate calculators all driven at the same rate. The multiplication factor was probably entered using the small unit to the right, which then controls the number of revolutions and the decimal shift of the two accumulators. The shifting mechanism is damaged. The shifting claw and locking pawls at the front are toggled by a rocking arm, but the cam followers beneath the two eccentric cams at the rear have jumped out of place, damaging their seats in the rocker arm. As a result, none of the components are properly aligned, and it is impossible to demonstrate the machine fully. This part of the machine is normally enclosed by a metal cover. The calculator was in use until the 1950's.
