A Former Pro Skater Built a Skatepark at His Family Farm

On the next stop of our road trip towards Vancouver Island we spent the day with our friend Mike Hastie, and his family at their Schoolhouse Farm in Delta, BC. Schoolhouse Farm is a beautiful family-run farm and wellness space filled with flower fields, greenhouses, a killer farmstand, wood-burning saunas, and retreat spaces built from repurposed shipping containers. It was amazing to see everything Mike and his wife Emily have created together. 🌻🌷 While we were there, we also made a tintype portrait of Mike and Emily using our large-format Intrepid camera and mobile darkroom. But there's another side to Mike's world that we couldn't leave without seeing. Mike Hastie was a professional skateboarder in the late '90s and early 2000s, and he built an incredible skatepark right at his home. Daniel gets a walking tour of the park, including street sections, curbs, benches, rails, a miniramp, and an RDS granite ledge. Mike then takes us into his skateboarding memorabilia-filled man cave, where he and Daniel reminisce about the old White Rock and Vancouver skate scene, their friends, and some of the stories and memories from those years.We finish the day the best way we know how—with a skate session. Daniel films while Mike and his son Devin get together for a father-and-son skate session that brings the whole day full circle. Truly "Farm-to-skaTable"! This is another chapter from our 18-day Vancouver Island road trip with our vintage 1970s overhead truck camper, where we traveled around visiting old friends, discovering unusual places, skating, taking tintypes, and documenting the people and stories we found along the way.
