No Surprises About 'Children of Blood and Bone' Casting: It's Just Hollywood Being Hollywood

In this video, we break down the casting announcement for Tomi Adeyemi's Children of Blood and Bone live-action adaptation, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King). We talk about why the casting decision many Nigerians are calling controversial isn’t surprising, the reality of how Hollywood works, and whether this means we’re moving forward or stuck in the same cycle of ‘safe’ casting choices. The core cast—Thuso Mbedu, Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, and Tosin Cole—bring undeniable talent, but Nigerians can't help but feel let down that no Nigeria-based actors were cast in lead or supporting roles alongside global powerhouses like Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch. However, there’s a silver lining: Damson Idris and Tosin Cole, both of Nigerian descent, have landed major roles, and there’s still a chance for more Nigerian actors to join the project. So, is this still a win for representation, or just another missed opportunity? Let’s unpack it all.
