Jesse Royal is part of the "Reggae Revival" movement and, along with musical colleagues such as Chronixx, Protoje, Koffee, Kabaka Pyramid and Lila Ike, makes sure that this style of music returns to its roots. Jesse Royal comes from a devout Rastafarian family from the St. James Parish area of Jamaica. He and his relatives are directly descended from the Maroons, those escaped slaves who were able to maintain their independence despite the English colonial masters and became Jamaican folk heroes. Again and again, Royal refers to her rebellious spirit. In his reggae tracks, the artist has reintroduced many of the soulful elements of the genre while keeping his finger on the pulse. Jesse Royal became internationally known in 2014 with the socially critical song "Modern Day Judas". The following year, international magazines such as "Vogue" reported on the roots reggae revival on the island, led by him and other reggae artists. In 2017, his debut album "Lily Of Da Valley" was released and jumped straight to the top of the Billboard Reggae album charts. Walshy Fire of Major Lazer once ennobled the exceptional artist with the words: "In Jesse I see Bob (Marley), Peter (Tosh), Bunny (Wailer), Gregory (Isaacs), Burning Spear, Sizzla." Jesse Royal's musical collaborators on his second album "Royals" (2021) include stars like Protoje and dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel, as well as rising stars Samory I and Runkus. The album received a Grammy nomination.
