The Black Death Never Made Sense - Until NOW
I have been making videos about the Black Death for years and the bit that always bothered me was the date. Everyone can tell you it was Yersinia pestis, nobody could ever tell me why 1347, when that bacterium had been sitting quietly in rodents out on the Central Asian steppe since at least 1338 without doing a thing to Europe. It did not get deadlier. It did not mutate. Something went and fetched it. And in December 2025 two researchers finally laid the chain out end to end, and honestly it made the hair on my arms stand up. A tropical volcano erupted around 1345 and threw fourteen teragrams of sulfur into the stratosphere, more than twice what Pinatubo managed. Three summers in a row went cold and wet across the Mediterranean, you can read them in the tree rings as blue rings in the Pyrenees, and chroniclers from China to Bohemia all wrote down that the moon was coming up far too dark without any of them knowing why. The harvests failed, wheat prices spiked at the same moment from Catalonia to the Hejaz, and so Venice, Genoa and Pisa lifted the embargo and sent their fleets east for Black Sea grain. The fleas lived in the grain dust for the whole crossing. What really gets me is the proof, which is not where the plague turned up but where it did not. Rome, Milan, Verona and Bari were not buying that grain and they did not get hit in the first wave. The ships that saved Europe from starving are the same ships that killed half of it. And here is the thing I cannot let go of. Nobody knows which volcano it was. It has no name and no location, just a sulfur line in the ice at both poles and a set of tree rings that refused to grow.
